Marbles Disrupt Traffic
Harborcreek – Drivers in Harborcreek encountered an unusual road hazard on Wednesday when a driver lost his marbles in the most literal sense of the word. Thousands of marbles meant for a landscaping project fell off the back of a truck on Buffalo Road around 10:15 a.m. The marbles rolled into yards and down the street, causing a small amount of carnage and earning a response from the Pennsylvania State Police and the Fairfield Hose Company. A street sweeper and several personnel from the street department caused traffic delays while cleaning up the mess.

Fourth of July Traffic Enforcement Results Published
Harrisburg – The Pennsylvania State Police released their traffic enforcement numbers for the Fourth of July Weekend. In the four days of enforcement, 12 people were killed in crashes, including one motorcyclist in Crawford County; the same number of people were killed in 2024. Most other numbers are lower than last year’s, but last year’s period was five days long. State Police responded to 803 crashes; they say 58 were caused by DUI, 156 involved injuries, and nine were fatal. 458 DUI arrests were made, and around 20,000 traffic citations were issued; more details are available online at PA.gov/psp.

Accident Kills One
Fredonia – A 92-year-old man was killed last Sunday when he was struck by a pickup near Fredonia. Edward Wiszczor of Washington, Pennsylvania, was struck while trying to cross Route 19 around 7:15 on the night of Sunday, July 6th. Investigators believe that the topography of the road made it hard for Edward to see the incoming vehicle. The driver of the truck was a 23-year-old man from Volant who was unable to stop in time to prevent the incident.  He has not been charged for the incident, and Mercer County Coroner John Libonati has ruled the death accidental.

PA Receives More Opioid Settlements
Harrisburg – Attorney General Dave Sunday announced that Pennsylvania will receive $28 million as part of a settlement with eight pharmaceutical companies that irresponsibly caused an opioid epidemic. This is a separate settlement from the one in which the state is receiving $200 million from Purdue Pharma. The settlement comes to around $720 million across all 50 states and is intended to help fund abatement and rehab programs. Each company will be making contributions on different schedules, and some of the companies have also agreed to provide cost-free assistance for addiction treatments.
