State police in Butler County say they are conducting a homicide investigation. Reports of an incident in Eau Claire were first put out late last night. Officials have not yet released much information, but, they say they believe a man shot and killed his mother’s boyfriend. It remains unclear whether that individual is in custody.
The Shenango girls basketball team captured the school’s first WPIAL Basketball Championship, defeating Freedom 44-34 to win the Class 3A championship. The Lady Wildcats improved their record to 22-4 with the win and now move on to the PIAA State playoffs. The Union Scotties meanwhile lost in the Boys Class 1A title 64-41 to Imani Christian.
A Monroeville woman has been charged with smuggling drugs at State Correctional Institute Mercer. The Sharon Herald reports 20 year old Amira Thompson was charged in the August 8th incident. Authorities said Thompson faces a number of charges. She was arraigned and released after posting bond. Thompson has a preliminary hearing set for March 23rd.
Lobbyists, advocates, and anyone else who comes in contact with a state House lawmaker can now report that person for sexual harassment. New rules on the issue were adopted Wednesday. Previously, only House lawmakers themselves and staffers were allowed to make reports to the chamber’s internal ethics committee. The change came after work on the issues from an S-E-I-U lobbyist who had accused Representative Mike Zabel of harassing her when they discussed a bill at the Capitol. She’s now calling on Zabel to resign. The Delaware County lawmaker has so far not responded.
Individuals who could serve on the jury in the Tree of Life shooting case are set to arrive in downtown Pittsburgh beginning Monday. The court has requested that they appear to complete questionnaires that will be used to establish a panel of peers in the trial for Robert Bowers. Twelve jurors and several alternates will be chosen when official selection begins on April 24th. Bowers is accused of killing eleven people in an antisemitic attack at the Squirrel Hill synagogue in October of 2018.
President Biden says he plans to visit East Palestine Ohio “at some point” following a toxic train derailment last month. Following a meeting with Senate Democrats, Biden added lawmakers are working to address rail safety issues through legislation. A bipartisan bill tightening safety requirements for trains carrying hazardous materials is gaining momentum in Congress following the accident. Ohio Governor Mike DeWine said Biden needs to visit the site, saying residents want to see the President.
Contents of the search warrant used to arrest a Pennsylvania man accused of killing four University of Idaho students have been unsealed. The records were made public Tuesday, two months after Pennsylvania State Police arrested Bryan Kohberger at his parents’ home in western Pennsylvania. The search warrant shows authorities took clothing, medical gloves, a flashlight and other items from the home. Kohberger’s preliminary hearing is scheduled for late June. He has yet to enter a plea in the case.
The parent-company of West Chester’s QVC, HSN and several other home shopping concerns says it’s laying off roughly 400 employees. Colorado-based Qurate says the cuts are part of a broader turnaround plan. Pennsylvania’s labor department lists QVC as the second-largest employer in Chester County. The company says affected workers will get severance pay, extended COBRA benefits and outplacement services, as well as access to its employee assistance program.
