Firemen in New Castle were called out early yesterday morning to a home on East Lutton Street. WFMJ-TV reports Crews from the Shenango Township and Hickory Fire Departments were called out to help put out the flames. No one was injured, but firefighters had to help one person get out of the home. The damage to the home was extensive and three people who lived there got out safely.  The Red Cross was assisting the family.

An Ambridge man has been sentenced to 150 months in prison followed by 4 years of supervised release on his conviction of violating federal narcotics laws.  Acting U.S. Attorney Tony Rivetti announced 38 year old Michael Gamble was convicted for possession with the intention to distribute 40 grams or more of a mixture and substance containing a detectable amount of fentanyl.  A search warrant was executed in December of last year at a  residence where Gamble had been distributing controlled substances

Officials say nearly 50 new Pennsylvania State Police troopers are now ready to protect and serve.  All the former recruits took part in a graduation ceremony over the weekend at the state police academy in Hershey. The starting salary for state troopers is just under 66-thousand-dollars annually.

Young riders up to the age of 21 will have a new option that will make travelling around Beaver County this summer more affordable.  The Beaver County Transit Authority has revised its Summer Youth pass to include free bus rides for anyone up to 21 years of age around Beaver County.  Applications for the Fast Forward Summer Pass are now open.  Applications are available at the Rochester Transportation Center and online.  Applicants must provide proof of age. 

Democrats in the Pennsylvania House are expected to start to move on their priorities after winning back majority status in Tuesday’s elections. The special-election win for a Philadelphia candidate gave the Democrats 102 seats, the minimum needed to control an agenda in the House. Republicans have retained their majority control in the state Senate.  The House is now expected to strengthen its legislative agenda on such issues as abortion and gun rights. Members are also expected to be able to better help Democratic Governor Josh Shapiro push through his budget priorities.

A Butler County man is facing charges after he allegedly took inappropriate pictures of a young girl inside a Walmart.  Police arrested Jamie Lopez and say he followed a nine-year-old girl around a Walmart store in Cranberry Township and used his cell phone to take pictures up the girls skirt.  He is being held in the Butler County Jail on a 25-thousand-dollar bail.

Several unions have filed an antitrust suit against UPMC, claiming low wages and worsening work conditions.  Officials with SEIU Healthcare Pennsylvania say UPMC has acquired dominant market power and unfairly used that power to harm patients and workers.  UPMC officials say they’re moving toward paying employees livable wages.  Congresswoman Summer Lee says she supports the unions’ cause. 

Reports released this week show the recently merged Butler and Excela health systems have lost more than 62-million dollars over the nine-month period ending in March.  The combined health system laid off 13 manager-level staff members earlier this year.  Officials with the system blame strong financial headwinds for the losses — which they say are not unusual these days for other healthcare providers.  Rising labor costs and patient volumes that have not yet returned to pre-pandemic levels have led to many of the losses.     

A woman in Evans City has been charged after her dog escaped her property and killed a chicken that belonged to a neighbor.  Police say it happened Tuesday night when the dog — who belonged to 45-year-old Devon Delprete — escaped and fled to another property in Forward Township and killed a chicken.  Delprete has been charged with confinement of dogs on the premises.  

The Mega Millions lottery jackpot continues to climb.  With four weeks having passed since the last time someone won, the game’s estimated top prize now stands at 132-million dollars. Lottery players will find out if they are holding a winning ticket when numbers are drawn tonight at 11.
