Local Trooper Earns PSPs Highest Honor
Harrisburg – A State Police Trooper from Girard was awarded the highest recognition bestowed by the Pennsylvania State Police, a Medal of Honor. In a ceremony at Harriburg’s Bishop-McDevitt High School yesterday, Jonathan Sutton was awarded his Medal of Honor for his actions in the pursuit of two armed suspects last year. In June of 2022, after observing an SUV driving at a high rate of speed, Trooper Sutton began to follow only to have the vehicle stop and a man exit to fire a gun at him. Instead of Retreating Trooper Sutton returned fire through the windshield of his own vehicle, forcing the suspects to retreat, and then he continued the pursuit until the suspects crashed their vehicle into a parked car and escaped on foot into the city of Erie. PSP Commissioner Christopher Paris called Trooper Sutton’s actions on that day gallant and intrepid and remarked that they went above and beyond the call of duty. Trooper Sutton joins a  short list of troopers bestowed the Medal of Honor.
