– State police are investigating an incident in which two residents of an all-boys residential treatment facility in Mercer County were injured on Friday.  According to the report, at George Junior Republic, one boy entered another boy’s room to assault him and, during that incident, the victim stabbed the suspect in the torso with a pencil.  The individual who was stabbed was taken to a hospital for treatment. 

State Police in Lawrence County report a one vehicle accident in North Beaver Township that sent a man to the hospital.  According to police, 32 year old Shane Wagner of New Castle was traveling on Covert Road when his vehicle went off the roadway and struck a tree.  Wagner was taken to UPMC Jameson Hospital for treatment.  Police said the investigation into the accident is ongoing.

A new safety feature is in place inside hundreds of University of Pittsburgh classrooms as students return for the fall term today.  Pitt officials say they have installed “panic buttons” as part of a campus emergency response review that was prompted by a hoax active shooter call at the Hillman Library in April.  The buttons allow many classroom doors to be automatically locked while an alert is sent to campus police. 

  Drivers across Pennsylvania are getting a little bit of relief at the gas pump, as Sheetz has announced it is dropping its gas prices for the rest of August.  The company gained attention back on the Fourth of July when they lowered gas prices to lower than two-dollars per gallon to celebrate the nation’s birthday.  Now, Sheetz says its Unleaded 88 fuel is being lowered to two-dollars and 99-cents per gallon throughout the rest of the month.  Unleaded 88 has been approved by the EPA for use in all 2001 and newer cars, trucks and SUVs. 

One woman was taken to the hospital following an accident in Mercer County.  State Police report 38 year old Amy Krepp of Greenville was traveling east on Kids Mill road when she failed to stop and struck a vehicle from behind driven by 41 year old Brandi Coonce of Freedonia.  Coonce was taken to UPMC Greenville for treatment.

PennDOT is looking for workers to help with roadway maintenance this winter.  Two hiring events are happening this week as the department looks to fill temporary CDL driver, road crew, and clerical positions.  The first of the events is planned from 1:00 to 7:00 p.m. tomorrow at the Washington County PennDOT office on Route 519 in North Bethlehem Township.  Another employment session is scheduled for Thursday at the Westmoreland County PennDOT office.  Additional details on application requirements are posted at employment-dot-P-A-dot-gov.

A group of Pennsylvania firefighters is headed out west to help their Golden State counterparts battle wildfires.  Authorities say 20 State Bureau of Forestry members gathered yesterday in Harrisburg to assemble and pack their equipment ahead of a long drive to Northern California.   The firefighters will face a different breed of wildfire in California’s rugged forests, with trees that are much taller than those found in the Keystone State.  Officials say plans are for the firefighters to spend two weeks in California.

With summer winding down, many Americans are heading out of town. AAA booking data for flights, hotels, rental cars and cruises show Labor Day weekend travel is up over last year: domestic bookings are up 4% and international bookings are up 44%. Drivers taking road trips this Labor Day weekend will likely see slightly higher gas prices compared to last year. The national average for a gallon of regular was $3.78 on Labor Day 2022 but has been above $3.80 for the past couple of weeks. Gas prices have spiked this summer because of tight supply and the high cost of oil.

N0 injuries were reported following a two vehicle accident in Mercer County.  According to State Police 28 year old Catherine O’Brien of Columbus Ohio, was eastbound on Interstate 80 when she struck a vehicle operated by 76 year old Cheryl Fisher of West Sunbury.  Neither driver was hurt. Police said O’Brien was cited for careless driving.
