The New Castle City Police along with the Lawrence County CIRT team and the Lawrence County SIU Team made an arrest connected to an attempted homicide.  According to the department’s Facebook page Joseph Larry  was arrested on East Winter Avenue on  attempted homicide charges .  Larry is accused of shooting into a house and car in New Castle on Mable Street on July 25th. Four handguns, suspected narcotics and cash were found inside Larry’s home.The investigation into the guns is ongoing and more charges are pending. He is being held in the Lawrence County Jail.

Support groups gathered at the State Capitol to mark the deaths of people who’ve died from fentanyl and other drug overdoses.  The vigil Thursday marked International Overdose Awareness Day, held annually on August 31st.  State officials say fentanyl has effectively replaced heroin in street use and has contributed to Pennsylvania being in the top ten deadliest states for drug overdoses.

Federal authorities confirm that Robert Bowers, this week, has taken his place on death row in federal prison.  Bowers was convicted this summer in connection with the killings of eleven people in a 2018 mass shooting at the Tree of Life synagogue in Squirrel Hill.  He was sentenced to death last month.  Bowers is imprisoned at the U.S. Penitentiary in Terre Haute Indiana.

  Pennsylvania State Police are reminding Western Pennsylvania drivers and all motorists across the commonwealth to be responsible this weekend.  Troopers will be out during the Labor Day holiday weekend this Friday through Monday and will be putting special emphasis on watching for impaired drivers.  Statistics show that there were 648 vehicle accidents in Pennsylvania during the 2022 Labor Day Weekend period with six deaths and 180 injuries.  More than 500 people were arrested for DUI that weekend.

Pennsylvania is considering holding its 2024 presidential primary earlier.  State election officials have said they might do that, partly to avoid voting on Passover.  State lawmakers advanced legislation Wednesday to change the primary from April 23rd to March 19th.  Governor Josh Shapiro, who is Jewish, has said he supports the date change.  A separate House bill would move the state primary date to April 2nd.

No injuries were reported following a head on crash in Butler County on Wednesday.  According to State Police, 18 year old James Gillen of Harrisville was traveling North on North Road in Franklin Township, when he crossed the center line and struck a vehicle operated by 64 year old Carl Weichey of New Castle. Neither driver was hurt.

The president of a Beaver Falls mineral company has been sentenced in federal court to 3 years of probation and ordered to pay over 222 thousand dollars in restitution to the Internal Revenue Service) and a fine of $55,000 on his conviction for filing a false income tax return. U.S. Attorney Eric Olshan announced 60 year old Paul Austin of Pittsburgh was President of J.P. Austin Associates, Inc., a mineral processing company in Beaver Falls, and underreported is income between 2012 and 2017.  The Internal Revenue Service, Criminal Investigation conducted the investigation leading to the successful prosecution of Austin.

State officials say you need to apply by September 14th for consideration to be part of the Young Ambassador of Pennsylvania Program.  Leaders with Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful and PennDOT say they want to hear from students in 10th, 11th, and 12th grades who are passionate about the environment and who are committed to making Pennsylvania the best place to live.  Those chosen for the program will become student leaders and be – quote – “given tools to effectively make a lasting change.” 

The University of Pennsylvania is the nation’s top school for a business education, according to new rankings from Niche.  The data company’s 2024 Best Colleges list also ranks Penn number seven in the nation overall as well as for best value.  The Niche listings released earlier this week also show Penn State University ranked 41st for a business education.  Dickinson College in Carlisle was ranked number 14 in the state for being one of the best colleges in Pennsylvania overall.
