Fatal Crash Involving Horse and Buggy
New Wilmington – Mercer New Wilmington road in Mercer County was closed for about five and a half hours yesterday after a fatal crash involving a horse and buggy. According to crash scene investigators, it was about 8 AM in East Lackawannock Township when a 97-year-old driver drove their SUV into the back of an Amish buggy which threw both occupants out the front. A male victim was severely injured and a female victim was declared dead at the scene.
Local Fire Department Receives Major Grant
Meadville – The Meadville Central Fire Department announced on Saturday that they were the recipients of a major grant to replace and repair the old ventilation system. The funds come from a Municipal Capital Improvement Grant through the office of the Pennsylvania State Fire Commissioner. These grants run from $25,000 to $100,000 and were established by an act of the General Assembly last year. Meadville Central Fire has received more than $200,000 in grant money this year which helps reduce the costs incurred by the city.
Roundabout Safety Study Results
Harrisburg – A three year study recently released by PennDOT showed that the installation of Roundabouts around the state has reduced the number of injuries in busy intersections by as much as 51%. Data from this study included information from the roundabouts installed in Saegertown and Vernon Township in Crawford County and does not account for the volume of traffic. The results showed that over the period of time, the total number of traffic accidents was reduced by 3% at those intersections from the time the roundabouts were installed, while accidents involving injury were reduced by 51%, crashes that resulted in major injuries showed a 24% reduction in volume; there was a 90% decrease in fatalities at intersections that were replaced by roundabouts.
