Missing Inmate Turned Himself In
Mercer – Authorities finally revealed the name of the Mercer County Jail inmate who walked out of a hospital while on medical furlough. The 31-year-old’s name is Alex Rabold, a Newcastle resident whose record mainly shows traffic violations and was being held for charges of disorderly conduct, drug possession, receiving stolen property, and evading arrest filed in Hermitage. On Monday Rabold was officially charged with escape by authorities and it is suspected he stole a 2014 Nissan Altima from the parking lot of UPMC Hamot, that vehicle was discovered in the town of Sharon on Saturday night. Rabold turned himself in to authorities in Mercer County on Monday night and was booked back into the jail at about 7:30 p.m.
Upenn President Resigns
Philidelphia – The President of the University of Pennsylvania resigned over the weekend after pressure from major donors, alumni, and even some members of Congress for her to step down from office. Liz Magill resigned on Saturday, though she will remain interim University President until another is appointed. Magill’s resignation follows a Congressional hearing in the United States Capitol Building a week ago where she failed to explain whether student protestors calling for genocide in Israel was a violation of UPenn’s student ethics code. Scott Bok, Chair of the university’s board of trustees has also resigned. After the Congressional hearing, a hedge fund manager named Ross Stevens threatened to pull out of a $100 million endowment and six members of Congress based in Pennsylvania also wrote to the board of trustees.
Fatal Accident Closes Route 8
Union City – A Centerville man was killed in a brutal crash that closed Route 8 in Northern, Crawford County for around 5 hours yesterday. Investigators from the Pennsylvania State Police say that just before 8 a.m. on Monday, 23-year-old Devon McWilliams lost control of his Toyota Corolla and began to spin. He was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from the car when it collided with a Mack truck that was coming in the opposite direction. Crawford County Coroner Scott Schell declared Devon dead at the scene of the crash. Route 8 was closed between Hilton and Church/Lake roads in Bloomfield Township from about 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
PHMC Grants for Mercer County
Mercer – The Mercer County Historical Society is the beneficiary of a $4,000 grant from the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission (PHMC). The money was awarded through the PHMC’s Cultural and Historical Grant Program which assists organizations that are not directly supported by other PA state programs and is based on a percentage of the Historical Society’s yearly operating expenses. 157 other organizations were qualified for similar grants.
