Teen Fatally Injured in Crash
Greenville – A teen driver was killed when his jeep crashed in Mercer County Sunday evening. The unnamed 17-year-old suffered fatal injuries after his Jeep Cherokee collided with multiple roadside trees shortly before 8 p.m. Crash scene investigators say they failed to properly navigate a sharp turn on West Jamestown Road in Green Township. The teen was wearing his seatbelt and the jeep’s airbags deployed but the injuries he suffered were too many and too severe to survive.
Pitt Titusville Begins Renovations
Titusville – The University of Pittsburgh in Titusville broke ground on a new project at its Education and Training Center on Monday. The project is a $7 million renovation of the Student Union which will include the inclusion of a new fitness center and a lounge area, they will also be building a maker space equipped with 3D printers, and an art gallery that will display student-made works of art and perhaps work from outside artists. The construction project is expected to be completed next spring. Funding for the project came from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, the University of Pittsburgh, corporate partnerships, and donations.
Man Falls Down Elevator Shaft
Erie – A man is dead after falling down an elevator shaft at an Erie business. The 71-year-old’s name has not been released, but Erie County Coroner Lyell Cook pronounced the man dead at the scene at around 5 p.m. on Tuesday afternoon, the death is ruled accidental. The man was an employee at Andy’s Equipment Exchange and fell from the second floor into the facility’s basement where it’s said he died instantly; the elevator doors were open even though the elevator itself was a floor above.
Allegheny Packrat Breeding Program Begins
Baltimore, MD – The Pennsylvania Game Commission has teamed up with the Maryland Zoo and UPenn to start a breeding program aimed at helping to repopulate the Allegheny Woodrat in the commonwealth. The woodrat, also known as a pack rat for its habit of collecting things like bottle caps and shotgun shells, is a non-pest species of rat that’s native to the United States and once thrived across the entire range of the Appalachian Mountains. The Allegheny Woodrat lives on rocky outcroppings in the forests, usually far from human habitation, a captive breeding program is set to begin at the zoo and the Game Commission intends to release them into suitable habitats.
Man Killed After Shooting at Neighbors
New Castle – A New Castle man was shot and killed on the back porch of his home on Tuesday afternoon. Officers from the New Castle Police are investigating the case and witnesses say that the man had shot at a neighbor first. The man was apparently drunk when he allegedly fired at least one shot at a group of young adults that he was angry at for making too much noise; someone returned fire and he was lethally struck. The man who was killed has not been identified and no arrests have been announced in the case.
