Restored Historic Bell Returns Home
Meadville – A 19th-century bronze bell with ties to two of history’s most celebrated Americans has come back to a Meadville church after a long absence. Yesterday the First Baptist Church of Meadville welcomed home its 855-pound bronze bell that was cast at Paul Revere’s foundry in the 1830’s for a Washington DC church that sat across from Forbe’s Theater where President Abraham Lincoln was assassinated. The bell made its way to Meadville to occupy the belltower at the First Baptist Church until last August when it was taken from the belltower for repairs. The bell will be on display in the lobby for the next three years until it is once again hung in the bell tower.
