Historic Fountain hit by Car
Edinboro – On Monday, Edinboro’s Police Chief, Landon Silva, made a statement about the destruction of a historic marker that was hit by an SUV Thursday morning. The 111-year-old fountain at the intersection of four streets in Edinboro’s downtown was severely damaged when it was hit by a Ford EcoSport shortly after midnight on Wednesday night; police say the driver was a woman who stayed on the scene but they did not reveal her identity and had not made a decision on charges. The fountain that was hit was first installed in 1913 and included places for horses, dogs, and people to drink from; it is also used as the Edinboro Historical Society’s logo.
Meadville Public Library Summer Programs Begin June 10
Meadvile – The Meadville Public Library’s summer programs kick-off in a big way on Monday, June 10th. Several weekly and daily free programs for people of all ages begin next Monday with the re-opening of Campfire Cafe on the library’s top floor, serving a cost-free lunch to children and their accompanying adults every weekday at noon. The library will also be hosting a Community Coffee hour at 10 a.m. every Friday morning, biweekly American Sign Language lessons, kayaking lessons, and much more. Man hit with TASER in Police Confrontation
Ellwood City – In Lawrence County, the police had to use a TASER to arrest an armed and apparently suicidal man who had been firing an AR-15-style weapon at a car. Michael Pounds of Ellwood City was allegedly approaching officers of the Ellwood City and Pennsylvania State Police brandishing the AR-15 and daring the officers to shoot him before he was TASEd. Before the police arrived they had received calls from neighbors about a suicidal man firing a rifle into parked vehicles. Pounds was previously convicted of a felony and not permitted to own firearms, police found more weapons and ammunition when they searched his home.
Stolen Holy Statue Returned
Erie – A statue of Mother Mary which was stolen from Saint Boniface Catholic Church in Erie was returned last Wednesday, the thief has been apprehended. The suspect, a white man, brought the statue back to St. Boniface four days after the theft on Saturday, May 25th. Police arrested the man at the church after he returned the statue on his own. The identity of the suspect has not been revealed as authorities determine the appropriate charges to file against him. We could not find any public court documents about the case.
Interstate 376 to close Next Weekend
West Middlesex – PennDOT has announced the June 14th to 17th closing of Interstate 376 near West Middlesex. All four lanes of the Interstate will be closed as workers lay down the steel supports to rebuild the bridge that carries Route 318 over the highway. Contractors from Mekis Construction will lay down seven steel beams, each 205 feet long, that will support the structure of the new bridge. The original bridge was destroyed when a large truck collided with it last year.
