Jamestown Canyon Virus Discovered in NWPA
Woodcock Township – Health authorities in Crawford County detected a rare mosquito-borne illness. On Monday it was announced that Jamestown Canyon Virus was detected in mosquitoes in Woodcock Township. Some mosquitoes can carry Jamestown Canyon Virus (or JCV) and it can be transmitted to humans through mosquito bites; according to the CDC, it has no treatments or vaccines and symptoms are rare but include unexplained fevers, headaches, and fatigue, but it may also cause encephalitis or meningitis. Only 281 cases of JCV were detected over an 11 year period making it a rare infection. The only known way to avoid JCV is to take precautions and avoid mosquito bites. It’s always well advised to use insect repellents while outdoors at dusk or dawn and to clear up sources of standing water around your home where mosquitoes may breed.

Woman Killed by Pickup Truck
Union City – The Pennsylvania State Police released the identity of a woman who was killed when she was struck by a pickup near Union City on Monday Afternoon. 42-year-old Melissa Arnold of Corry suffered fatal injuries on Route 6 when she was walking toward Union City at around 3:45 p.m. Investigators report that she had parked her car nearby and witnesses say Melissa was using her phone when she walked into the travel lane of a man in a Silverado pickup that had just passed through a blind ‘S-Turn’ and could not avoid hitting her.

OSHA Investigation Into Beaver County Workplace Death
Struthers, OH – The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is investigating the death of an Ohio man at a work site in Beaver County. A 48-year-old employee of Rudzick Excavating, named Frank Vickers was killed in an accident last Thursday. Neither authorities nor Rudzick Excavating has elaborated on the deadly event. OSHA has investigated the company four times in the past three years with the most recent investigation leading to serious citations and fines. This investigation is expected to take six months.
