H5N1 Bird Flu not in PA Dairy Products
Harrisburg – The USDA reported on Wednesday that Pennsylvania is the first state to have confirmed that no cows have contracted the H5N1 bird flu; there are also no known human transmissions. However, highly pathogenic avian influenza has devastated domestic poultry in Eastern PA and wild bird populations around the commonwealth and has been detected in pigs. To avoid contracting or spreading the disease report any encounter with sick or dead animals and avoid contact with them. You can call (833)PGC-Wild (724-9543) to report any potential cases of avian influenza.
Human symptoms of H5N1 are similar to the seasonal flu but often more severe and can include seizures and a greater risk of complications; being vaccinated against seasonal influenza does not protect against bird flu. If contracted, symptoms of H5N1 would begin within 10 days of coming in contact with an infected or dead animal and if you develop symptoms inform your medical provider about your contact with the animal. If you cannot avoid contact with a potentially infected bird then avoid touching your face or eyes with unwashed hands and use personal protective equipment (PPE) to lower your risk of transmission.
