Man Saved From Ice
Waterford – On Monday afternoon, a man was rescued after falling into the ice on Lake Leboeuf while attempting to fish. The 75-year-old’s identity was not released, but he fell through the lake ice near Hazel and Water Streets in Waterford and was submerged in freezing water up to his neck. A passerby saw the man fall through and was able to keep the man from sinking while the Stancliff Hose Company arrived to finish the rescue operation.
Another man was rescued from falling into the ice near Presquile on Sunday. This week’s warm weather will make the lake ice around the region more treacherous. You should never ice fish alone and take precautions such as carrying ice picks or a rope anchored to something on shore to help escape if you fall in. Watch for signs of thin ice or cracks on the surface and avoid areas with structures or fallen logs.

CCCFS Office is Moving
Meadville – Crawford County’s Center for Family Services is moving. The main office on West Center Street will close down on Wednesday, the 18th, and reopen at its new location on 996 South Main Street in Meadville on Monday, the 23rd. The larger office space will allow CCCFS to better serve the community. The food pantry and thrift store will still operate normally while the office is on the move. Once reopened, there will be no change in the regular operation hours of CCCFS.

Homicide Conviction
Sharon – Nearly two years after the fact, a Mercer County jury convicted a Sharon man of first-degree homicide. 32-year-old Jamel Jordan was found guilty of murder in the first degree in the death of Terran Page-Hughes last week. Jordan shot Page-Hughes in the head on Ravine Place Street in Sharon in August of 2024. He will be sentenced at a later date by Judge Amrhein Jr., and until then will stay in Venango County Jail, where he has been incarcerated since the shooting.

PIAA Overturns Suspension of Football Team
Union City – Union City High School’s athletics program won its appeal against PIAA District 10 over a year-long suspension for their football team issued after they forfeited a game last season. On October 3rd of last year, the Union City Bears forfeited a scheduled game against the Mercyhurst Prep Lakers. The Bears were down to only 13 healthy players and decided to forfeit the game for safety reasons. District 10 responded by suspending Union City Football for an entire year; however, an appeal to the league resulted in a unanimous decision in the school’s favor.
