Superior Court Overturns Mealy Conviction
Erie – Erie County’s District Attorney Elizabeth Hirz says she will be appealing after a panel from the PA Superior Court overturned a conviction for a woman found guilty of letting her toddler starve to death. In June, 26-year-old Kayle Mealy was convicted of first-degree murder; DA Hirz proved to a jury that Kayle prioritized playing video games and talking on the phone over feeding her two-year-old son, Brysen. The majority opinion returned by the Superior Court says that they didn’t prove Mealy’s specific intention to kill the child, making a conviction of first-degree homicide too severe.
The court did not overturn Mealy’s other convictions. She could serve at least 20 years for crimes like Endangering the Welfare of Children, Aggravated Assault, Reckless Endangerment of Another Person, and more.

Fire at Lehigh Valley Hospital
Dickson City – In State News, all patients, staff, and visitors were safely evacuated during a fire at Lehigh Valley Hospital in eastern Pennsylvania. On Wednesday night, a fire began in the orthopedic wing of the hospital in Dickson City and quickly spread. Multiple fire crews worked well into Thursday morning, fighting against the flames, which at one point burned through portions of the hospital’s roof. The PA State Police, Emergency Management, and Department of Health are all investigating the cause and damage of the fire.
