Crash Injures Two Elder Men
Barkeyville – Two people were hospitalized when they crashed on Interstate 80 in Venango County’s Irwin Township last Monday. Emergency responders suspected that 85-year-old Leland McCalmont and 77-year-old Stephen Chikosky had both suffered serious injuries when they collided near the rest stop in the westbound lane of the interstate. Investigators say that McCalmont partially drifted into the passing lane and was struck by Chikosky, who was trying to get around him.
Meadville 1825 Presents: Native Americans in Crawford County
Conneaut Lake – When the Seneca tribes first encountered Pennsylvania’s largest natural lake, they observed how the snow and ice remained on its cold waters for longer than the surrounding land, and dubbed it ‘snow waters,’ which in their language was Conneaut. In 1825, a village on the lake’s southern shores named Evansville thrived, but would not take on the same name as the lake for nearly 70 years. The legacy of Seneca and later Lenape tribes who called this land home before us, and even the tribes before them, lives on in many place names throughout Crawford County, Pymatuning, Cussewago, Venango, and others. The history of Crawford County’s aboriginals still echoes through our own past and present.
On Monday, July 21st, Meadville 1825 invites everyone to their next special event, “Native Americans in Crawford County,” a history of what life was like before settlers claimed the region for themselves. Darrel Earnst will host the presentation starting at 7 p.m. at the Conneaut Lake Historical Society on 105 North Third Street, Conneaut Lake. This event is free of charge.
