PA Supreme Court Overrules Felony Murder Law
Harrisburg – On Thursday, Pennsylvania’s Supreme Court ruled that in cases of felony murder, mandatory sentences of life without parole are unconstitutional. In a 6-1 decision, the court gave the legislature 120 days to come up with new sentencing guidelines for Pennsylvania’s felony murder laws after determining that the current law violates Pennsylvania’s State Charter. The decision was made after the court heard the case of a man named Derek Lee; he was sentenced to life without parole when his accomplice in a Pittsburgh robbery killed one of the victims.
