October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. One in 8 women in the United States will get breast cancer during their lifetime. When detected early, the survival rate of breast cancer at 5 years is 99%. Regular breast self-exams can help you understand the normal look and feel of your breasts. If you notice a change, report it to your healthcare provider immediately. Screening with mammography can detect breast cancer early, when it’s easier to treat. However, if you have a family history of breast or ovarian cancer, or you’re at a higher-than-average risk of developing cancer, you may need earlier screening. Remember, breast cancer is most commonly thought of in women but breast cancer does occur in men, too.
